Should Your Business Website Have A Blog?

When it comes to business websites, some just are better than the rest. And no, I’m not referring to the website design, but rather the information that is available to potential new clients mainly in the form of a blog.

As an SEO consultant, I see way too many business websites that do not incorporate a blog. They only slap together a collection of pages of services they offer as well as a little bit of information about the company.

If this sounds like your business, you are missing out on a TREMENDOUS marketing opportunity and need to fix this ASAP!

Now that doesn’t mean you have to become a full-time blogger, but even posting 1-2 articles a week can go a long way in earning you new customers.

So if you’re on the fence about adding a blog to your business website (no matter what your business is), here are some reasons why you definitely need to consider.

Increased SEO Traffic

One of the obvious reasons you need to add a blog to your business website is because of the SEO value. Even if you are a traditional brick and mortar business, adding quality articles to your site can earn you links and traffic, which in turn will help you with your local Google listings.

No matter what type of business you are in, you can write regularly on topics related to your industry. And by constantly adding more content to your business website, you will be doing a lot to help increase your SEO profile.

Establishes Your Credibility

Another great thing about having a blog on your business website is that it establishes your credibility. This is especially true if you are providing a service of some kind.

A blog can help differentiate you from your competitors as it demonstrates your competence in whatever service you are offering, and this is especially important if you are a newer business.

For example if you’re a local dentist, writing on some of the procedures you offer can give potential new customers an idea of what to expect along with a platform to showcase your expertise. If a potential customer is on the fence about your business, this added reassurance can possibly help you to close the deal.

Another example I can offer is for my own experiences years ago when I first started out as an SEO consultant. I believe having a blog that I regularly updated helped me to land more clients because again it demonstrated that I knew what I was talking about, and clients were more willing to take a chance on me because of it.

Opens Other Promotional Channels

Having a blog on your website also allows you to take advantage of other promotional channels like social media. By having content that you can post to places like Facebook, Twitter, and even YouTube, you can reach an audience far beyond what perhaps you normally could otherwise.

For example if you owned a local gym, you could write articles about diet and exercise that you can post to Facebook and Twitter. Within those articles you could create YouTube videos demonstrating these exercises, which again would increase your reach even further. As your following grows online, it’s likely people will go out of their way to seek out your gym as well if you’re putting out compelling content.

Another example would be if you were a swimming instructor and had a blog on swimming techniques and best practices. By creating content for your blog and then posting it on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, again as your following grows so should your client base.

Having a presence on these social media platform where people can get to know more about your business as well as see your expertise demonstrated will help you increase your sales much further than if you had just a plain informational business website.

Some Final Thoughts

No matter what business you’re in, I highly recommend that you add a blog to your business website. That doesn’t mean again you have to spend all your time creating content and promoting it, but even a minimal 1-2 hour investment a week can do wonders for your business.

Having a blog not only helps your search engine results but also demonstrates your credibility, and this of course will allow you to pick up more sales. So if you haven’t done so already, get your blog going and begin to reap the rewards!
