These days it’s definitely more en vogue to be some sort of entrepreneur. The idea of entrepreneurship is romanticized in TV and music heavily as of late, and the thought of being your own boss and in control of your destiny is just something that is appealing.
I think the same thing can be said about internet marketing. Yes it’s a form of entrepreneurship, but many fall for the idea of possibly making a lot of money while also being able to work from anywhere in the world on their own schedule.
However do YOU have what it takes to be a successful internet marketer? If you’re new to making money online or are thinking about taking the plunge, here are some thoughts from someone who has been making a living online (and a good one) for over a decade now.
Understand It’s Still A Job
I think what separates the people that make it versus the people that don’t is the mentality in which they approach internet marketing. At the end of the day it’s still a job, and if you’re serious about making any sort of living at it, you’re going to have to treat it as such.
I think a good chunk of people that venture into internet marketing in the first place are looking for get rich quick schemes. They want to figure out how to work 1-2 hours a day from the beach and then enjoy the rest of their time doing something else. If your mentality is you want to make a ton of money doing the least work possible, then you’re probably going to fail.
Every internet marketer that I know that is making a good living is probably working way more than the average 40 hour work week. It’s just like any other entrepreneurial endeavor, to be successful you’re going to be putting in a lot of long hours. So you need to ask yourself if that is something you’re willing to do.
It’s All About Consistency
Making money online is all about consistency. It really isn’t difficult, and if you’re willing to put in the work you will be successful.
The secret to making money online is really doing simple, repetitive tasks daily. Whether it be writing a blog post every day or making YouTube videos every week, if you can be disciplined and consistent you’re going to make a lot of money.
However as you know being consistent even with simple tasks can be extremely difficult. For example we all know that to lose weight we need to diet and exercise (simple repetitive tasks), however there is no shortage of obese people out there.
In a lot of ways internet marketing is the same. The tasks are easy and simple to do, it’s just people don’t have the discipline to do them, and that’s what separates the successful internet marketers from the ones that fail.
How To Be Successful
If you’re new to internet marketing or perhaps are already doing it but still haven’t had much success, here are the steps you need to take.
- Pick one thing and learn it inside and out (ie SEO, PPC, Video Marketing, Blogging etc)
- Commit to a regular routine
- Don’t quit your day job
The first thing you need to do is to pick one aspect of internet marketing to specialize in and try to learn everything you can about it. Don’t chase the shiny new object every few months (very common mistake), just stick with something and try to make it work.
When I first started off years ago my primary focus was SEO. I learned everything I could about it, and eventually it became my bread and butter. Only after years of SEO work did I then decide to venture out and learn new things, and I recommend you do the same.
Second, it’s important that you create some sort of regular routine. If you’re focusing on YouTube it may be committing to making 3 new videos a week. If you want to be a blogger, it could be committing to writing 30 articles a month. Just set some specific daily/weekly/monthly goal and stick to it.
And finally while you’re learning to be a profitable internet marketer, I highly suggest that you keep working a normal job and do internet marketing on the side.
Don’t quit your job and dive head first into this, that’s how so many people fail. People that do this don’t give themselves enough time and resources to succeed, and eventually the bills pile up and they are forced to give up internet marketing and get a regular job.
The truth is you’re going to need funds to support your internet marketing endeavors, so you’re going to need to keep working your day job. Paying for stuff like domains, web hosting, software, subscriptions etc. can add up pretty quick, so having money coming in to support your budding internet marketing career is important.
Before I made the transition to full time internet marketer I worked as a waiter to support myself. I would work my shift waiting tables and then come home and work on my internet marketing stuff. Eventually when I had some money saved up and was able to make enough with my online projects to support myself, I made the full transition over, and I recommend you do the same.
If keeping a job and working on your internet marketing projects sounds like a lot of work to you, to be honest you probably don’t have what it takes to make it doing this. So again really take a hard look in the mirror before you decide this is what you want to do, because it’s not all sunshine and rainbows.
Personally I think working full time as an internet marketer has been a very rewarding career, but it does take a lot of work to make it happen. However if you’re willing to step up and take the challenge, I look forward to welcoming you into my chosen profession.
